The Mission to Seafarers is one of the world’s largest port-based welfare operators, a support network spread across 50 countries and over 200 ports, supporting people who work on the world’s oceans often for long periods away from their families. Support is practical, emotional and often spiritual. Originally established as the Bristol Chanel Mission by the Reverend John Ashley, other Anglican ministries followed to become a missionary society, now called The Mission to Seafarers to reflect its modern role in caring for seafarers.
In Hong Kong the Sailors Home and The Mission to Seafarers operate two facilities – The Mariners Seafarers centre in Kwai Chung and the recently redeveloped Mariners in Tsim Sha Tsui. As part of the redevelopment a new chapel St Peter’s Seafarers’ Church has been built, is now furnished with church furniture designed and made by Treske Ltd.
Seating for the congregation is supplied in the form of 193 Bespoke Southwell stacking chairs constructed using a strong solid oak frame, each with the cross keys of St Peter carved into the rear of the back rest. Additional seating is provided by 6 benches surrounding the altar and lectern. Priests’ chairs and a credence table complete the sanctuary furniture. A bespoke font sits in the main entrance of the Chapel and has been designed to complement the styles of all the other sanctuary furniture items.
The design is a stylistic take on ships with the furniture shaped to represent the bow, port and starboard sides, and deck of seafaring vessels. Oak was used for the main furniture, with pippy oak featured on the sloping bow, clad by oak veneer on the port and starboard sides where appropriate. This original design uses the oak veneer and the sloping nature of the curved and shaped side of the altar, font, credence table and lectern, while prime European oak is used for the top surfaces and structure.
