Christ Church, Morningside - Choir Stalls, Clergy and Altar furniture
Christ Church, Morningside, is a Scottish Episcopal Church and is one of the churches that sit surrounding the famous ‘Holy Corner’ in Morningside/Bruntsfield just south of Edinburgh city centre.
The church has been undergoing extensive refurbishment since 1999 to the stonework, roof and tower.
A key stage in developing the nave and choir area of the church was the installation of quality and flexible new choir seating and choir readers, celebrant seating and readers, as well as a movable nave altar, all designed and made by Treske.
The choir of 24 was accommodated on eight elegant lightweight choir readers each accommodating three choristers. The choristers sit behind a privacy panel that also conceals a shelf, with the open upper part of the frontal partially covered by an open arch finishing below the reader.
The choir stalls are strongly linked to the church through the use of quatrefoils replicated from elsewhere in the church on the ends of the choir readers. Each carved quatrefoil was picked out in 24 carat gold leaf.
On the surface of the choir readers choir polished brass choir lighting was mounted. The lighting uses a system that is battery operated, with LED’s mimicking candles within the glass housing.
Two accompanying Priests desks were also made, both following the design lead of the choir frontals, both also having carved gold leaf quatrefoils.
Seating for the choir and clergy used the Treske St Mary’s armchair and bench designs. These comfortable benches allow for flexible choir numbers with adjoining benches creating longer seating surfaces. The lightweight and flexible nature of the stalls and benches allow for choir different configurations to be used easily.
The altar was also designed for ease of movement and is mounted on rollers concealed within its base to avoid lifting.
